Silent Auction & Book Sale
New items are arriving every day for our November 28th Silent Auction and Book Sale. Some of the new items are quilts, a soft, cozy rag quilt and a pretty baby quilt. Today, we have received a “Flight over Dufferin County” for two. Amazing items to buy for a gift or to treat yourself! We will also have about 25 book baskets. These make great gifts…come on out and do your Christmas shopping. We are so grateful for all the items we have received from community members and local merchants. This promises to be a great fundraiser for us again this year.
Authors in the Hills of Mulmur… You will see a photo of Janet Horner, Chair of the Authors in the Hills of Mulmur committee, awarding a cheque to Chair of the SPL Board, Geoff Dunlop and myself, Rose Dotten. This presentation is a testimony to the success of the event with funds going to the libraries that Mulmur supports and the Writers Guild of Canada. I was a member of the committee and SPL staff volunteers supported the event.
Children’s Programs
Yesterday and today we have had four classes from Glenbrook Elementary School. What a great partnership for our schools and the library. Promoting the love of books and reading are strong pillars in our community. The younger that children are when they start, the better chance they have for academic success in the future. In line with this, we also offer the Chrome books from the Upper Grand School Board so students can come to the library after hours, and complete their school assignments saving them on their school accounts.
Starting in January, we will be offering new Children’s programs… Lego for little ones, Forest of Reading Book Club, Money Management Strategies for children and teens and an additional Story time for the youngsters. Keep watching our website and Facebook page for the details.
Teen Scene
For the month of November our Teens are focusing on enhancing their creative writing skills. We spent the first week writing about our favourite sayings, and do our teens ever have some interesting quotes, especially influential song lyrics. Next week, we look forward to a truth telling written challenge, which is sure to elicit some laughs and thoughtful responses. Stay tuned for our upcoming December teen challenges! Don’t tell anyone, but there are prizes to be won!
New Program – Technology
Sign up for our new fun and free Technology teaching program, Tech Tutor, Thursdays and Fridays; we will be offering one on one sessions for Seniors in our community. We received a grant to purchase 4 new iPads and will be using them to teach you! If you have your own iPad, please feel free to bring it and learn more of its features. Emily will be offering the instruction so please call and book a time. We’re excited about this and hope you are too! Call 519 925-2168 to schedule your session.
Sunday Afternoon Events
Sunday, December 20: 1–4 p.m.: Holiday table or mantel centerpiece. Just in time for your Christmas dinner, you will learn how to create a beautiful table centerpiece. All the flowers, greens and other materials will be supplied. The cost of this workshop is $40. The great thing about these workshops is that you will learn skills so you can create beautiful flower arrangements for any occasion.
New Books
This past weekend, I read Sara Paretsky’s latest book, Brushback. Her unorthodox female detective V.I Warshawski, makes you chuckle on one page and hold you in suspense on the next. Her books were my first introduction to crime/detective novels way back, and I’ve never stopped reading widely in the genre. Elin Hiderbrand also has a new book Winter Stroll, a heart-warming family story with lots of twists and turns. Perhaps there are a few too many to make it believable as to who ends up with whom. She also leaves the reader dangling a little for the next book. The new must reads, Elena Ferrantes’ Neapolitan series, starting with My Brilliant Friend (we do have all 4 in the series) are being hailed as unconditional masterpieces and Ferrante herself, as one of the greatest novelists of our time.
