The Shelburne Wolves Midget LL2 team fought back in their Friday (Jan. 8) game against the Flesherton Golden Hawks but couldn’t make up the one goal gap they needed to get back into the game.
The Wolves gave up two goals in the first period and couldn’t score despite having a few good opportunities.
The second period saw the Flesherton team take back to back penalties to give the Wolves a five-on-three advantage but the Shelburne squad couldn’t find the back of the Golden Hawks net.
After taking a penalty the Wolves were in a four-on-four situation and the Flesherton squad went ahead on a break-away that score to give them a three goal lead.
The Wolves scored late in the second period on a nice place across the front of the Flesherton net.
Taking advantage of another powerplay in the third period, the Wolves scored to make it a 3–2 game and the Shelburne squad started working hard to get the tie goal.
Late in the final period they Wolves put six attackers on the ice but they couldn’t get the goal they needed and the game ended 4–2 when the Golden Hawks scored on the empty Wolves net.
“We were struggling in the first period then got everybody calmed down and we started playing better. We just couldn’t get any pucks in the net,” said Wolves goalie Caleb Best. “It was a little bit weak today. We kept turning the puck over, we couldn’t get the bounces, the puck was just rolling off the sticks.”
After the second period the squad decided they had to start shooting on net if they were going to score.
“We were playing well but we just couldn’t get the puck in the net. The coach said to start getting shots on net, start dumping the puck in,”Caleb said of the third period effort.
The Wolves will be back on home ice at the CDRC on Tuesday, January 12, when they will host the Honeywood Hurricanes.
The game is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
