Cyclist share the road

The majority of roads in Grey County are only two-lane, which means bicyclists, motorists and agricultural equipment operators will often be sharing the road. The Grey County OPP want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable experience on our roads. When everyone drives with care and courtesy – it’s easy to share the road! Bicyclists – Bicycles are considered vehicles under the Highway Traffic Act and have the same rights and responsibilities on public roadways as motorists. Bicyclists should always follow the rules of the road by obeying all traffic laws, signs and signals to avoid potential fines, injury, or even death.
Bicyclists can improve safety by following these tips: • ride in the same direction as traffic • ride in single file • be predictable – ride in a straight line – don’t weave around obstacles • when riding in groups, leave gaps to allow space for motorists to pass • use hand signals to communicate turns and stops to other road users • be visible – wear brightly colour clothing, including reflectors • stay out of motorists’ blind spots – especially truck drivers • anticipate the next move of drivers, pedestrians and other bicyclists • watch for debris, potholes and grates • wear a helmet and make sure it fits correctly
