Fans of Halloween and art will want to mark their calendars for Saturday, Oct. 25, as the Shelburne Foodland is hosting a kids’ pumpkin painting party from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Organized by Heidi Piel, the front-end manager of the store, it’s part of a new initiative by the new owner to get kids engaged in the community.
“The new owner came in at the end of April of this year,” she said. “He wanted to create new events for children. This summer, we had a barbecue with face painting, a bouncy castle, and balloons.”
“For this season, we’re doing pumpkin painting, something that we think can get the kids involved,” Piel added.
The event will take place in the bistro section of the store, which is located near the exit of the store and near the lunch area. Snacks and drinks will also be provided for those in attendance.
Kids in attendance will be able to select the pumpkin they prefer and will be free to use paints and other art supplies to decorate the pumpkins however they choose. Of course, the pumpkins will also be theirs to take home when the event is over.
Coming off the success of their first event, the summer barbecue, Piel said she is hoping for a strong turnout and has extended the time of the event.
“We’re hoping that a lot of children come out,” she said. “The April event we did went well, the bouncy castle and such, so we’re hoping for the same with our second event. We’ve extended the times by an extra hour because there will be trick-or-treating downtown, just so people doing that have time to come to both.”
The new community-oriented approach is shaping up to be a fun way to get kids out and engaged, and Piel is looking forward to seeing what the kids come up with. As for what comes next, that hasn’t been planned out yet.
“It’ll have to be a discussion I have with the boss after this, for now, I’m not sure what we will be doing next,” she said.
That being said, if this event is another success, there might be more to follow in the coming months.
